League of Legends (LOL) World Championship or simply The Worlds 2021 will begin on 5 October in Reykjavik, Iceland. Twenty-two teams from all around the world will compete for the Summoner's Cup and the title of LOL World Champion.

The tournament was supposed to be in China. However, travel restrictions forced the organisers to look for an arena in Europe. Hence, the Laugardalshรถll Indoor Sporting Arena in Reykjavik, Iceland, has been chosen.
Every year twenty-four teams are invited to the prestigious tournament. However, the Vietnamese teams are to sit out due to travel restrictions in Vietnam. And so, the organisers decided to go ahead with just twenty-two teams this year.

The tournament will happen in three phases - the playins, the group stage and the knockouts. The ten teams without direct qualifications will be playing in the playins. Four teams from these ten teams will qualify for the group stage. The group stage will have the twelve teams with direct entries from China, South Korea, Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia and the four teams from the playins.

The ten teams in the playins will randomly split into two groups of five teams each. They will play each other in a single round-robin format. The winners of the groups will advance to the group stage while the last-placed teams will end their campaign. The second, third and fourth-placed teams of the two groups will play for the final two spots of the group stages.

The third and fourth-placed teams of the same group will play each other, and the winner will face the second-placed team of the other group. The winner between those teams will each grab the final two spots of the group stages.

The group stage will have sixteen teams divided into four groups. Each team will play every other side of the group twice. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockouts. All the games will be a best-of-five game.

The total prize pool for Worlds 2021 is US$2,225,000. The twenty-two participating teams and the two Vietnamese teams that can't participate will have the prize money distributed among themselves.

The teams with direct qualifications are Edward Gaming (LPL/China), FunPlus Phoenix (LPL/China), Royal Never Give Up (LPL/China), DAMWON Gaming (LCK/South Korea), Gen.G (LCK/South Korea), T1 (LCK/South Korea), MAD Lions (LEC/Europe), Fnatic (LEC/Europe), Rogue (LEC/Europe), 100 Thieves (LCS/North America), Team Liquid (LCS/North America) and PSG Talon (PCS/Southeast Asia).

The teams for the playins are Beyond Gaming (PCS/Southeast Asia), Cloud9 (LCS/North America), DetonatioN FocusMe (LJL/Japan), Galatasaray Esports (TCL/Turkey), Hanwha Life Esports (LCK/South Korea), Infinity Esports (LLA/Latin America), LNG ESports (LPL/China), PEACE (LCO/Oceania), RED Canids (CBLOL/Brazil) and Unicorns of Love (LCL/CIS).
